Local Substitute Teacher meetings The most important thing we can do to improve life for Subs is to have local meetings where we can work together. UTLA is divided into 8 areas. Once a month all the Union reps from each school go to an Area Meeting to get the latest Union news. It is a good place to find out what is going on, and the meetings are open to all of us. The calendar of UTLA events can be found in the United Teacher newspaper, the UTLA pocket calendar coming out in September, this newsletter, by asking a local union rep at your school or by calling UTLA. Ask the Union Rep (called Chapter Chair) at any of your schools for the location of the Area Meeting. I have created a schedule for Substitute Teacher Area Meetings. If you want to have a place to meet, you need to go after school to your local Area Meeting on September 20, and ask the Area Chairperson to help you find a place you can meet. Then when you have a place to meet, call me and I will publicize it in the school flyers, and on the phone hotline. You can listen to the phone hotline by calling 800-556-UTLA and asking the operator to transfer you to extension #500 or call 213-368-6249, and then press option #5 for info on Subs. If you would like to be the contact person who will make arrangements with your Area Chair for a meeting for your area, call Leonard Segal at 818-832-1446.
A very important way to get organized to improve our economic, political and professional status is to connect us all through the Internet. That way we can get immediate updates, answers to our questions, solutions for problems, share ways to make more money, save money, do better in the classroom and lobby for greater respect and benefits. If you have an email address, then go to the Substitute Teacher website for details on how to get the email newsletter. Let us know if you know about any great deals on computers. We also need people who would volunteer to go to a member's house if they just need someone to set up their computer for Internet access. I will give instructions in future newsletters for those who need help. By working together I think we can get most of us connected. We need a Chapter Chair for the Substitute Teacher Committee. The person should be familiar with UTLA and the basic concerns of Substitute Teachers, so you can represent them in the House of Representatives.
