Substitute Background

Substitute Teachers

Substitute Teachers teach every child.

One to two full school years of every child’s education in a K-12 program are taught by a Substitute Teacher. The amount of days taught by a Substitute Teacher is closer to two years in low performing schools due to the higher absenteeism caused by more difficult conditions.

One secondary Substitute Teacher can teach as many as 27,000 students in one school year and can influence the effectiveness in each classroom for a week afterward.

There is no training for Substitute Teachers or for anyone else at the schools on how to support the success of their Substitute Teachers. The only training provided for Substitutes is years of experience.

New classroom teachers have the stability and support from mentor programs, teachers and administrators at their school, but there is no training or support for Substitute Teachers. The only training provided for Substitutes is years of experience.

It is difficult to keep new teachers. Nationally between 40 and 50 percent of new teachers leave their jobs within their first five years. Conditions are more difficult for Substitute Teachers. We can’t afford to lose our most experienced Substitutes by giving their jobs to the probationary teachers who are waiting to get their own classroom again.
